Sofia budget gets dirty
15:00 Thu 26 Jul 2001 - By Rozalia Hristova

The streets of Sofia may not be cleaned after September if the city’s municipality does not inject more money into that part of its budget.

The Sofia Municipality owes more than eight million leva to the three concession companies that are responsible for cleaning the city, said the heads of the companies in a letter to Sofia Mayor Stefan Sofianski and the head of the Sofia Municipal Council Antoan Nikolov. The information was announced by the council’s press office on Tuesday.

The budget for cleaning this year is 43 million leva and, according to the three companies, this money will be enough until September. The payables to Chistota Sofia AD amount to almost five million leva. The company Volf 96 should receive 1.5 million and DITC – 1.7 million leva. The municipality’s failure to pay has led to an accumulation of debt for the companies towards their employees and their suppliers of materials, the letter read.

The heads of the three companies suggested three strategies for solving the problems. One was to clean the streets of Sofia and collect the garbage only until September when the budget resources will be used up. The second possibility was to only collect the garbage from trashcans and not do any cleaning until November. The third suggestion was that the budget for the cleaning of Sofia be updated by adding seven million leva to it.

At its session today, the Sofia Municipal Council will discuss the suggestion of Sofianski to add about one million leva to the budget. The resources would be taken from the budgets for planting and security of the municipality, about 600,000 and 400,000 leva respectively.
