09:00 Mon 27 Feb 2006

In January inspectors collected 8610 leva from fines for smoking on public places. In January 9757 restaurants and cafés throughout Bulgaria were inspected for following anti-smoking regulations, Novinar newspaper reported.

Most of the inspections occurred in Sofia. As a result from imposed sanctions 850 leva have been collected.

Most violations of the ban occurred in Plovdiv, where inspectors collected 3400 leva in the form of fines for smoking in public places.

The ban for smoking in public places functions since January 1 2005. Still, a number of cafés and restaurants fail to implement measures listed in the new regulations. Many still lack separate tables for non-smokers.

Hah! That's a joke. They should be raking in hundreds of thousands of levs per month with the amount of violations that are going on, not 8000!
