Even small countries play an important role in European Parliament (EP) decision taking, vice chairman of the Party of the European Socialists (PES) Robert Goebbels said during a visit to Bulgaria.

Goebbels took part in a seminar on the importance of the EP and on some of the PES projects within the EP.

For votes to count in the upcoming members of the European Parliament (MEP) elections in Bulgaria, people had to cast a ballot for some of the major political formations in it, Goebbels said.

Bulgarian MEPs at the moment are very active, Goebbels said.

Goebbels is on a visit to Bulgaria on an invitation of the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP). He will take part in a roundtable discussion on European economic growth and the policies of European socialists.

Apart from the upcoming MEP elections, Goebbels commented European policies affecting Bulgaria. One of them is the labour market restriction for Bulgarian workers that some of the older EU member states decided to introduce.

It was wrong practice to introduce such restrictions, Goebbels said.

Socialists are struggling for an open European labour market, Goebbels said. Another goal is providing more favourable labour conditions and social policies, he said.
