Slovakia had decided to open its labour market to Bulgarian and Romanian migrant workers after the two countries’ EU accession on January 1 2007, a Slovak council of ministers media statement said, as quoted by Agence France-Presse reported.
There was no reason to believe that the opening of the labour market to Bulgarians and Romanians would cause significant problems, the statement said.
Some EU countries had expressed concern that a wave of migrant workers would flow to their labour markets, taking away the jobs of locals.
UK and Ireland already announced they would introduce restrictions to the Bulgarians and Romanians’ access to their labour markets. Estonia is the only country that declared it would not introduce restrictions on Bulgarians and Romanians. According to separate media reports, Belgium and Denmark also intended to open their labour markets to Bulgarians and Romanians.
The Slovak cabinet’s decision expressed the country’s will to show Bulgaria, Romania and the EU members Slovak understanding on the non-discrimination principles, the statement said.
