The slander trial of the five Bulgarian nurses sentenced to death for HIV infection in Libya was postponed to April 22.
Libyan officers initiated the trial. The nurses previously said that officers tortured them into confessing guilt for the infection. Now the officers demand compensation and additional verdicts for the claims.
Bulgarian lawyer of the nurses Hari Haralambiev requested the delay in order to examine documents related to the case.
At the same time the first medical symposium dedicated to the fight against infectious diseases began in Tripoli, Bulgarian news agency BTA reported.
More than 30 medics from various hospitals will participate in the seminar. Its aim is to aid medical workers in Libya obtain higher qualifications and learn more about preventing the spread of infectious diseases.
Foreign virologists reported that the HIV infection that the Bulgarian nurses are blamed for resulted from poor hygiene in the hospital of Benghazi. The court in Tripoli found the nurses guilty and sentenced them to death in December 2006.
