Emil Danchev, the agent of Tottenham Hotspurs' Bulgarian striker Dimitar Berbatov, said that he had ‘given up’ on discussions of a new deal for the striker with the White Hart Lane club.
Berbatov has two years left on his current contract with Tottenham, with an option for another two seasons, and he had said he was happy in the team, but his agent once again raised the cloud of uncertainty over the Bulgarian's future with the club, London tabloid Evening Standard said.
With a number of leading European teams reported to be interested in the services of the Bulgarian national team captain, Danchev claimed that Berbatov’s “future [was] up in the air”, the newspaper said.
Champions League football was a temptation for Berbatov, who has already played in one competition final while at Bayer Leverkusen, and Dantchev hinted that he was trying to arrange a move for his client.
“His future will be decided in the next couple of months,” Dantchev told the Evening Standard. “We have twice given up talks about Berbatov's new contract and this is due to the fact that Tottenham are unwilling to fix Berbatov's transfer price,” he said.
At the age of 27, Berbatov needed to win trophies, according to Danchev. The footballer had attracted the attention of seven or eight big European teams, the agent added.
The club denied having any problems with the Berbatov’s contract talks, Evening Standard said. A club spokesman told the tabloid that Berbatov was already one of the highest-paid Spurs players.
