Michael Shields, the British sentenced to 10 years in prison for the attempted murder of Bulgarian bartender Martin Georgiev, will serve his sentence in the UK.
Shields is to leave Bulgarian prison on November 23, The Guardian reported.
Though found guilty of hitting Georgiev with a rock on the head, Shields said that he was innocent and in his Golden Sands hotel room at the time of the incident.
A number of UK officials called for the release of Shields. Controversy arose from the fact that another man, Graham Sankey, confessed from the UK hitting Georgiev on the head.
Since Sankey refused to testify before a Bulgarian court, his confession was not considered evidence establishing the innocence of Shields.
Over the course of the trial Sankey's attorney said that his client was talking about another incident, The Guardian reported.
The transfer of Shields became possible after his family paid the 200 000 leva fine that court imposed.
