The attorneys of British citizen Michael Shields, sentenced to 15 years prison for a premeditated murder attempt in Bulgaria, will request trial re-examination from Supreme Court of Cassation.
Shields was found guilty and sentenced for hitting Bulgarian bartender Martin Georgiev with a rock on the head in Sunny Beach resort, Focus news agency reported. Shields visited Bulgaria together with a group of Liverpool fans, who previously attended a match in Turkey.
Another member of the group, Graham Sankey confessed in Britain he committed the crime. Sankey, however, failed to testify before Bulgarian court and his account was not taken into consideration during the trial.
Shields said he was in his room at the time of the accident.
Lawyer Georgi Gatev requested re-examination of the trial due to previously committed administrative violations. Court authorities did not clarify initially Shield's rights, which also represents a violation, Gatev said.
Witness testimonies also provide controversial information, Gatev said. Sankey's confession needs to be taken into consideration, according to the attorney.
According to the prosecution accounts are reliable, since the same information came from different independent witnesses. Sankey's confession does not relate to the trial and aims at diverting attention from the actual proceedings, the prosecutor said.
