Seeds Maria Sharapova, Andy Roddick, James Blake, Lindsay Davenport, Daniela Hantuchova and Vera Zvonareva will have to wait for 2009 if they want to win something at Wimbledon after all dropping out of this year's tournament on June 24 2008.
World number two and fashion icon, Russia's Sharapova, lost her second-round match to compatriot Alla Kudryavtseva (ranked 151) in straight sets (2-6, 4-6). Sharapova did show some of her strong sides as the fast service, but she lacked concentration and lost despite her much debated new outfit.
“I guess it wasn't my day,” Sharapova was quoted as saying by wimbledon.org after the match.
June 24 was certainly not the day for American Andy Roddick, who lost to Serbia's Janko Tipsarevic in what became one of the longest at Wimbledon this year (3 hours and six minutes). Roddick lost by (7-6, 5-7, 4-6, 6-7).
Former number one Lindsay Davenport also had to leave the grass at the All England Club after losing to Argentina's Gisela Dulko. In Davenport's case, it was an injury that forced her to pull out of the match.
With all those top quality players out the fight for the trophy would most probably be between Marat Safin, Venus Williams, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Jelena Jankovic, Dinara Safina, Andy Murray and Richard Gasquet all of whom advanced to the next round.
The big loser so far seems to be Novak Djokovic who was blown away in straight sets by Marat Safin on June 25.
