Serbian government adopted on March 10 a proposal to dissolve the parliament and hold snap parliamentary polls on May 11 2008, at the same time with scheduled local elections, the cabinet's press service said in a statement.

“It has been determined that the Serbian government no longer has a unanimous and joint policy, which [...] prevents the government from performing its basic constitutional function and conducting the policy of the Republic of Serbia,” the statement said. 

The proposal comes two days after Serbian prime minister Vojislav Koštunica resigned over the lack of consensus in his cabinet regarding the future foreign policy orientation of Serbia.

While Koštunica and his Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) severely opposed continuing European Union integration unless the EU recognised Serbia's territorial integrity and possession of Kosovo, its coalition partner, the Democratic Party (DS) of president Boris Tadić, thought the country should continue advancing towards the EU and should look for EU's cooperation in solving the Kosovo issue.

The government's March 10 proposal has been forwarded to president Tadić for approval.
