Serbia won't take revenge on Bulgaria for recognising Kosovo - ambassador 13:13 Fri 21 Mar 2008 - Elitsa Savova Kosovo independence proclamation affects Serbia’s sovereignty and is much more painful for Belgrade when a neighbouring country recognises it, Serbian ambassador to Bulgaria Danilo Vucetic said on March 21, one day after Sofia recognised Kosovo’s independence.
However, Serbia would not do anything that would hinder the development of economic relations with Bulgaria, Vucetic said in comments aired by private broadcaster Nova Television. Still, it was possible that there would be repercussions in other fields, such as the cancellation of the scheduled high-level visit of Serbian officials who were due to discuss health care issues later this March.
It was now up to the two countries to ensure that such consequences would be less severe and to “lay the basis for improvement of the relations in future,” the ambassador said.
As to the reported incidents with stoned Bulgarian cars and beaten drivers, “these were isolated cases, which resulted from the actions of separate people, but were not a product of the Serbian Cabinet’s policy”, Vucetic said. Serbia would gain no benefits if communication routes changed, as the traffic from Bulgaria through Serbia was of strategic importance to Serbia.
Deputy Foreign Minister Lubomir Kyuchoukov, who was invited to present Bulgaria’s position on the issue at the channel's morning talk-show, said that there were three main reasons for the recognition of Kosovo - regional stability, Bulgaria’s membership in EU and NATO and the fact that everything pointed to the irreversible nature of Kosovo's independence drive. If the process was not stabilised, "it could lead to the use of force. Bulgaria does not want to have powder keg next to it and to be evaded by strategic investors,” Kyuchoukov said.
“Bulgaria had never claimed that independent Kosovo was a factor for stability,” but that was now the reality and Bulgaria had to face it and try to find stability within the current situation, Kyuchoukov said. However, he could not say what exactly Bulgaria’s benefits from Kosovo’s recognition would be.
Still, Kyuchoukov emphasised that Bulgaria took the decision to recognise Kosovo without any pressure form outside.
According to Vucetic, the unilateral proclamation of independence by Kosovo did not lead the region to stability. Such stability could have been reached only with mutual agreement, he said. Vucetic also said that he was still ambassador to Bulgaria, but was recalled to Belgrade for consultation, that being the standard operating procedure announced by Serbian authorities for countries that recognised Kosovo's independence.

Bulgarian neighbours, we, the Serbs, will never forget your decision. One day, you will need us, and you will get only silence. Good byu, our dear former frieds. Good luck with Albanians. Obviously, they are better than we are. | | Comments by Igli - 15:36 21 Mar 2008 | | I applaud Bulgaria’s effort in recognizing the free state of Kosovo. It is said in ancient history that Bulgarians and Albanians were the first races in Balkans and Europe. Than came the others, Greeks and Slavs etc. Yes it’s true and I agree with our Serbian friend’s comment. One day you’re up the next day one may be down again, which is why one should never prosecute a neighbor, kill, rape and torture it’s kin. However, what’s done it’s done and no one can undue the past, but we can nurture and heal feelings by cultivating a friendly atmosphere for the future of our kids. The new generation should keep their heads up and form ties with each other so we can have at last a United Europe of which we all can be proud of.

Dear Branko, I am bulgarian and I am ashamed from our puppit government. It was WRONG DECISIION made against the will of the people.
This spineless politicians rotten by coruptions and scandals does not deserve to be called bulgarians. SHAME ON them !!!!
The real voice of BULGARIA talked already. Please read the letters and statement made by monks in Zoagrafou monastery and Bulgarian intelectuals.
Please forgive us. | | Comments by BBlairsdale - 19:25 21 Mar 2008 | | Branko, I am half Serb but let’s not blame all of the Bulgarians for this decision. Politicians are their own species and do things for what they perceive to be the best for their own country, even blindly or just following submissively to those who yield greater power.
I am sure much pressure and gentle threats have gone on in the background, what can you expect from politicians whose concern is relations for their country that has just joined the EU.
Such is the price for joining the EU but that’s life.
So let’s add a bit of realism to it and not be surprised when it happens. The consequence will bite most back in the ass anyway, since free thinking and laws no longer matter.

You'll always be our neighbors and we know that's not you-what's presented as you...Unfortunately,your government must pave chosen way to the "normal" world,EU,NATO etc.We understand that..We would never change you with flat,cold- blood German, depressive Scandinavian of any kind,ex-colonial (murderous) nation from the West-whatever...You're our neighbors and you'll stay that..Decision of your government is logical for now but not-tomorrow and that's other subject...Be cautious, however on that path (as a humans)and our neighbors..Nothing about love..,but respect! One day "they" can still sit on ex-colonial power of any kind and expect from YOU to pay their bills..,the billing is always coming, they know that...You actually go in company of afraid, their intelligence knows that,also..Sorry about that! You'll always be our neighbors, like Japan!Serbia to Tokyo!(over Kamchatka,as planned..) | | Comments by Marko Jankovic - 23:55 21 Mar 2008 | | Im serb from Republika Srpska(still part of bosnia), as a serb i feel humiliated because cradle of serbian nation is taken by foreign savages. But if you look it at the bright side atleast we dont have to live with those islamists anymore, we cant make them to breed less, for 50 years they would have greater population then serbs in serbia, from USA this is not anything wierd for me, they create their puppet NATO states, and it will be home of new american missile shield. bulgaria recognizing kosovo was not a good idea, in 1990 bulgaria had over 9 milion population, now its 7,5 milion, thats 1,5 milion bulgarians less, and turkish population is still growing in bulgaria and is around 900,000 now, for 15-20 years turks will be significant majoroty in many regions of bulgaria, and recognizing kosovo was not a good idea for bulgarian own sake, i would never recognize those turks if they proclaime their own independence(turks made albanians so horrible), but Belgrade could take revenge on kosovo and losing part of teritory is not nice thing or feeling, bulgaria is a nice country and i hope for better relations between serbs and bulgarians in the future, and by the way in the name of serbs i want to apologize to bulgarians for atacks on their cars and citizens in serbia, also for serbian invasion on the end of 19 century it was wrong,we were puppet of austria and russia, but you teached us a lesson and defeated us back then and im glad, varna is a nice city by the way i was there last summer:) PEACE! VIVA GREECE,BULGARIA,MACEDONIA,MONTENEGRO AND ROMANIA!!! | |
