Researchers from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) are working on an anti-cancer vaccine together with representatives of the centre for alternative medicine in Sofia.
Oncologist Lilia Sivcheva said that the vaccine will be used for all types of oncological diseases, regardless of the disease stage.
The only condition was for the patient to refrain from any other treatment, said Sivcheva as quoted by Darik Radio.
Currently researches were working on the extraction of immunoglobulins from healthy volunteers. The vaccine was first going to be used on lab animals, Sivcheva said. In case test results were positive, it was going to be administered to volunteer, said she.
The aim of the vaccine was to provide treatment, rather than disease prevention, said she.
Once approved and registered the vaccine would cost 600 leva, Sivcheva said.
A number of medics said they were unaware of the existence of the centre for alternative medicine. Officials said its activities and the vaccine research were going to be investigated.
BAS head Ivan Iuhnovski said he lacked official information of anti-cancer vaccine research in Bulgaria.
