French presidential candidate Nicolas Sarkozy mentioned the case of the five Bulgarian nurses sentenced to death in Libya during a television dispute.
Sarkozy talked about the case during his final dispute with Segolene Royal, Bulgarian National Radio reported.
France should remain an open country especially to political refugees and women, Sarkozy said. The group includes the Bulgarian nurses in Libya and everyone that suffers worldwide, he said.
His remarks focused on France’s attitude towards immigration. Later in the speech, however, Sarkozy said that France cannot deal with all the misery in the world. The country had the right to decide who was welcome, he said.
Earlier during the campaign, both Sarkozy and Royal met members of the nurses’ families. Sarkozy said that the freedom of the nurses will be French foreign policy priority.
