RULING PARTY IN BULGARIA POINTS TO GAPS IN CONSTITUTION AMENDMENTS
09:00 Wed 31 Jan 2007

A missing item was found in the fourth set of constitution amendments that is to be accepted within three days.

MPs already approved the suggested changes on first and second reading, Dnevnik daily reported.

During a parliamentary session Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) member Yanaki Stoilov said that the amendments pointed out the manner in which members of a judicial inspectorate would be selected but lacked dismissal recommendations.

The independent inspectorate is to supervise the work of Bulgaria's judiciary. Such constitution amendments resulted from EU requests for higher transparency and accountability of the justice sector.

National Movement Simeon II (NMSII) said that no more changes could be made to the amendments. Corrections are permitted only between the two readings.

MPs decided that Stoilov's suggestion could be clarified in a separate law. After debates, MPs in the parliamentary committee inspecting the amendment approval accepted the constitution changes.
