RULING PARTY IN BULGARIA CONSIDERS SIMULTANEOUS ELECTIONS
09:07 Fri 04 Aug 2006

The Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) is still considering the simultaneous elections for presidents and for Bulgarian members of the European Parliament.

Previously BSP said the time was insufficient to get ready for both types of elections. On August 3, however, BSP said that elections were probably going to take place at the same time.

Dnevnik newspaper reported that Bulgaria’s EU accession treaty said that MEPs had to be selected by the end of 2007.

At the same time most officials said it was best to select the Bulgarian representatives early to give them the chance to get acquainted with EP procedures.

Some politicians said the reason was not good enough as some of the initially selected Bulgarian MEPs could miss being re-elected later on.
