Bulgaria after the previous EC report was presented.
The June 27 European Commission (EC) report on the reform progress of Bulgaria and Romania will refrain from advocating the introduction of safeguard clauses.
Online publication euexpands.com reported that the two countries would be subjected to monitoring until 2008.
Neither country had fully managed to deal with the areas pointed out as problematic shortly before their EU entry, the report said, quoting EC’s analysis.
Most of the criticism is connected to inefficient fight against corruption and slow justice reforms.
Observers said that EC decided to use the possibility of safeguard clause introduction to pressure the two countries to execute reforms. Since progress has been made, punishment would be unnecessary, the report said.
“Bulgaria, which is said to have performed less impressively, is believed to escape punishment if continues efforts with ‘diligence,’” euexpands.com reported.
EC said that it will update the report in the beginning of 2008 and will issue conclusive analysis by the middle of the year.
