A fight between 60 to 70 Roma erupted on the night of April 30 2008 in the town of Petrich near the border with Greece, Dnevnik daily quoted Bulgarian news agency BTA.
The news was confirmed by Petrich police. The reason for the fight was a conflict between two Roma families in the Roma neighborhood in Petrich.
When police arrived at the scene, the Roma attacked the officers with stones and broke the rear window of a police car. With the help of reinforcements, police managed to restore the order after firing shots in the air. No one was harmed by the shots, police said.
Eight people involved in the fight prior to arrival of the police were injured. Just one was detained for 24 hours.
In March a fight between Roma forced police to use special forces in the town of Pleven central Bulgaria. About 80 people got into a fight at a birthday party, police said back then.
Three people were injured.
One of the most memorable fights between Roma happened in October 2006 in the town of Pazardjik when about 400 Roma blocked the town’s Roma neighborhood. It took police two days to restore peace in the neighborhood.
Five people were arrested and charged with hooliganism. Local Roma leaders said that the conflict was a religious dispute among the Roma’s themselves.
