Unidentified perpetrators have attempted to break into a Unicredit Bulbank branch on Lomsko Chausse boulevard in Sofia's Nadezhda neighbourhood late on March 30, private broadcaster bTV reported.
Police officials, quoted by bTV, said that it was unclear how the would-be bank robbers attempted to enter the bank, which has closed-circuit cameras and an alarm system, but no guards.
BGNES news agency claimed the robbers attempted to break in through the roof, which collapsed and triggered the alarms, driving the robbers away.
Nothing went missing in the robbery, bTV claimed. "We don't keep a lot of money in our branches and it is obvious we are not dealing with professionals," Bulbank CEO Levon Hampartzoumyan said, as quoted by bTV.
The biggest recent bank robbery in Bulgaria was recorded in March 2004, when robbers dug a tunnel under the branch of the Biochim bank branch in Sofia's Yuzhen Park (South Park) neighbourhood and stole the contents of 41 out of 600 deposit boxes in its safe. The stolen goods were estimated to be worth seven million leva and the perpetrators were never caught.
