Sofia’s Vitosha Boulevard

Vitosha Boulevard, one of the major arteries of Sofia, draws its name from the mountain situated in the immediate vicinity of Bulgaria’s capital.

The mountain massif is one of the symbols of the capital city, and, although it is not as large as Rila, Pirin or Stara Planina, it has become more popular and is the most frequented Bulgarian mountain. One of the main reasons for Vitosha’s popularity is its location - numerous bus lines make the mountain easily accessible. In addition, the destination is just a half an hour drive from Sofia and is attractive during any season.

Vitosha’s highest peak is Cherni Vruh (Black Peak), which soars at 2,290m. The locale includes varied flora and fauna, three climatic zones and curative mineral springs. The area also hosts Vitosha National Park - one of the most beautiful and frequently visited parts of the mountain. Opened in 1934, the park offers shelter to wolves, bears, and wild cats, as well as less dangerous animals such as badgers and deer.

Vitosha’s natural resources and location make it one of the country’s most popular winter spots. It offers excellent skiing conditions with an extensive network of runs and lifts. Skiing usually starts in December and continues until late spring. Snow cover often reaches 1.5m and the duration of the season is approximately 120 days.

The ski runs and tracks, most of which are situated on the open slopes of the mountain, are suitable for all kinds of skiers - from beginners to experts. The steep slopes below Cherni Vruh, however, pose a challenge for many professional skiers. There are also excellent conditions for slalom and cross-country skiing, as well as for walking tours.

The resort has six ski runs, two of which have been approved by the International Skiing Federation for international competitions in Alpine and cross-country skiing. The courses are well maintained with machinery for tramping the runs and artificial snow machines.

Two lifts take skiers to the foot of Cherni Vruh peak, while the modern gondola lift from Simeonovo to Aleko provides transport from the snowy mountain to Sofia’s suburbs in a few minutes. A splendid view of the city is one of the perks of these lifts.

The mountain also boasts a Ski Patrol that provides round-the-clock, emergency service and is fully prepared for any accidents or problems. It is based at Cherni Vruh peak and Aleko Hut.

If you’re just starting out, the resort offers ski classes which come in five difficulty levels, for groups and individuals. Most of the instructors are said to be fluent in multiple languages.

If you don’t have your own equipment, the ski rental service at Vitosha resort also provides more than 1,300 sets of gear from famous international companies.
