ROAD SAFETY STRATEGY ACCEPTED IN BULGARIA

Bulgaria’s Cabinet accepted a national strategy for increased road safety for the period from 2007 to 2010.

The strategy aims at decreasing the number of road accidents and the number of victims in such accidents, a Council of Ministers press release said.

Analyses of road accidents and the reasons for such served as the basis for the strategy. It also lists positive practices in other European countries.

The strategy includes preventive measures, infrastructure improvement, better emergency aid system and the introduction of modern equipment for road safety control.

Cabinet ordered from ministries the elaboration of programmes for minimising the number road accidents by February 15 2007, the press release said.

Nearly 80 000 road accidents happen in Bulgaria every year, nearly 1000 people die and more then 9000 are injured.
