RIGHTIST PARTY SEES POLICY DIVISION AFTER BULGARIA'S MEP ELECTIONS
09:38 Tue 29 May 2007

Rightist party Union of Democratic Forces (UDF) saw division in two parts after the first Bulgarian members of European Parliament (MEP) elections.

Party members either sympathise with Democrats for Strong Bulgaria (DSB) or the newly formed centrist Citizens for the European Development of Bulgaria (CEDB), Novinar newspaper reported.

UDF’s national council will meet on May 30 to discuss party policies after the failure of the party to gain support in the MEP elections. As a result of the electoral failure UDF leader Petar Stoyanov resigned.

According to some UDF members, to become stronger the party should negotiate common policies with the DSB. Other members believe that co-operation with CEDB is necessary, since the party emerged as the big winner of the MEP elections.
