RIGHTIST PARTY LEADER IN BULGARIA TURNS DOWN PRESIDENIAL ELECTIONS NOMINATION
14:54 Wed 26 Jul 2006

Union of Democratic Forces (UDF) leader Petar Stoyanov decided to turn down his nomination for single presidential candidate of all parliamentary represented right-wing parties.

Stoyanov said that UDF would support Democrats for Strong Bulgaria's (DSB) nominee Nedelcho Beronov.

DSB leader Ivan Kostov said that Stoyanov's decision would enable rightist formations to select a strong and competitive nominee.

Negotiations between rightist parties for the selection of one candidate and the unification of the fragmented right wing have been going on for months. Until present parties failed suggesting a nominee acceptable for all formations involved in the talks.

Kostov said that fast actions were needed to select officially one nominee and challenge the campaign of current President Georgi Purvanov. Purvanov would run for second term in office, Bulgarian news agency BTA reported.
