The Union of Democratic Forces (UDF) and Democrats for a Strong Bulgaria (DSB) agreed to nominate a mutual candidate for the mayor of Sofia.
The negotiations between the two parties developed like an “exemplary soap opera”, mediapool.bg said.
The leaders of the Sofia branches of the two parties, Atanas Atanassov of UDF and Borislav Borislavov of DSB, finally came to an agreement after a month of standstill.
UDF had been trying to receive support from the current Sofia mayor and informal leader of Citizens for the European Development of Bulgaria (GERB) Boiko Borissov. As a result, DSB threatened to run solo in the elections.
The name of UDF and DSB’s mutual nominee is still undecided.
Borislavov said that the candidate should be a “prominent democrat” and “familiar” to the Sofia population, but someone who is outside the two parties.
