RESORTS IN BULGARIA FIGHT LACK OF SNOW
09:00 Thu 28 Dec 2006

To fight the lack of snow, each year Bulgarian winter resorts invest in the purchase of artificial snow and track maintenance equipment.

The equipment enabled resorts launch the ski season for a fourth consecutive year, despite the lack of snow, Capital newspaper reported.
At the same time, resorts spend more on the artificial snow production. Bansko concessionaire Ulen  already invested six million euro in a track-maintenance system.

Snow production in Bansko this season began in mid-November, Capital reported. Artificial snow can stand temperature of up to 12 degrees Celsius, enabling the opening of the season on December 16 with snowy tracks, the report said.

Currently Bansko uses 75 artificial snow machines and plans to purchase more the coming season. In comparison, West European resorts have at least 300 such machines.

Borovets winter resort still faces equipment insufficiency, Capital reported. It currently uses seven artificial snow machines. According to plans Borovets is to purchase enough machines to provide snow for 80 per cent of the resort's tracks.

In the coming three years Borovets is to invest four million euro in a snow production system, resort representatives said.
