RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCES USAGE IN BULGARIA TO INCREASE BY 10 PER CENT
10:58 Mon 12 Mar 2007

Bulgaria will increase the use of renewable energy sources by 10 per cent until 2020, Foreign Minister Ivailo Kalfin said.

The introduction of renewable energy sources is expensive while energy consumption in Bulgaria is constantly increasing. National energy needs could hardly be covered by renewable energy sources only, Kalfin said as quoted by mediapool.bg.

So far six to eight per cent of Bulgaria's energy has been produced by renewable energy sources.

European Union requirements for union members energy policy determined a 20 per cent average increase of renewable energy usage within the EU. Each country will define its own national energy strategy and discuss it with the European Commission (EC), Kalfin said.

Kalfin said that he was satisfied with the Council of Europe meeting held in Brussels where a decision was taken that each EU country had the right to choose its energy sources, including nuclear production.

The Council of Europe accepted the proposition for the establishment of nuclear energy forum with the participation of producers, the countries, non-governmental organisations and eco organisations.
