During a work visit to the US Foreign Minister Ivailo Kalfin met Bulgarians living in the Washington area to discuss the relations between Bulgaria and the US.
Kalfin said that the relations between the two countries were evolving fast. US investment in Bulgaria was growing, Kalfin said, and one of the visit's main aims was determining economic areas where further co-operation was possible.
The country was working on the requirements for visa-free travel to the US, Kalfin said.
Bulgaria also received unconditional US support for the trial of the five Bulgarian nurses charged with intentional HIV infection in Libya, Kalfin said as quoted by Focus news agency.
On December 19, the death sentences of the Bulgarians were confirmed. US secretary of state Condoleezza Rice said that the verdicts were unacceptable.
Kalfin said that the interest of leading media helped in popularised the case. The Foreign Minister gave interviews to CNN, BBC, TBS, New York Times and Washington Post while in Washington.
