The State Energy and Water Regulatory Commission (SEWRC) has fined Bulgarian electricity distribution company CEZ Electro Bulgaria Ltd 50 000 leva.
After inspections at the company, SEWRC found that it had failed to ensure enough time for its clients to pay their bills after it did additional readings of meters in July.
CEZ had caused social tension and failed to guarantee its clients' rights, the commission found, Focus news agency reported.
Following the inspection by SEWRC and representatives of the Ombudsman’s office, CEZ Electro Bulgaria extended the period for bill payments. It also opened 134 additional cashiers offices in Sofia.
The company also failed to submit to SEWRC in time the arrangements for meter reading, the period within which the company would deal with electricity cuts and period for correcting mistakes in bills.
The SEWRC will start regular inspections at electricity distribution companies to check their readiness to meet the upcoming winter season.
