REFUGEE WOMEN IN BULGARIA SEEK FREEDOM, HUMANE ATTITUDE AND CAREER
09:01 Fri 09 Mar 2007

Lack of home and job, low wages and intolerance feature among the main problems that refugee women face in Bulgaria, refugees from Asia and Africa said during a round table discussion.

An Iraqi woman said that she faced intolerance over the past several years. She related it to ultra-nationalist movement Ataka.

Mostly younger people showed intolerance, she said.

Daniela Veleva, representative of State Agency for Refugees with the Council of Ministers, said that xenophobic attitude resulted from a problems with the set of values of Bulgarians.

Bulgarians showed intolerance even against Bulgarians, Bulgarian news agency BTA said.

A refugee from North Africa said that discrimination was everywhere. The most important thing a refugee should do is accept local culture.

Refugee women appreciated the shelter they received and Bulgaria’s attitude towards them. They could contribute to Bulgaria ’s development, they said.

I wish to comment on this subject. Bulgarians and other nationalities should place themselves in the shoes of others and to try to imagine what it would be like to experience being homeless or jobless all at the same time often with family members to support! I would gladly open my house to someone in need, even if i could not offer employment, I would offer shelter. As it would be the humane thing to do. We all have basic needs, and we should treat others the way we ourselves would like to be treated. Regards to all.

I have been residing legally in Bulgaria for more than 12years though not as a refugee but as a permanent resident permit holder,in my twelve years here i still see myself as a refugee and unwanted due to the fact that many bulgarians are congenital racists to the core with the exception of few ones... i have been attcked brutally by the obnoxious group the so-called skinheads without recieving no justice from the competent authorities...as an african i have suffered many unprintable insults and degration and abuse...there's no day i walk the streeti do not hear the word nigga! it sucks! ...i see that many bulgarians and racists alike do not just want foreigners in there country...to say the least sometimes i regretted coming to this intolerant country however i have many many wonderful and intelligent bulgarian friends who have been supportive at all times ..you can teach many people that racism is ugly but u can never eradicate the embeded racism in some of them it's a congenital diseases..... i wish i could treat many bulgarian expertriates in my country the way they are treating us here....
