The closure of units three and four of Kozloduy nuclear power plant featured in Bulgaria's EU accession treaty and the country had to fulfill its obligations, head of the European Commission (EC) delegation to Bulgaria Michael Humphreys said.
EC was happy with the manner Bulgaria met the accession requirements, Humphreys said as quoted by Focus news agency.
The construction of Belene nuclear power plant was acceptable, as long as all safety requirements were met, he said.
European commissioner and former European integration minister Meglena Kouneva said that further talks on the re-opening of reactors three and four could take place, if Bulgaria had will for such negotiations.
EC could not do much, as EU lacked common legislation and directives on the issue, Kouneva said. As member states Slovakia and Lithuania also had to shut down nuclear reactors, said she.
On December 31 2006 Bulgaria stopped the electricity production of the two reactors to meet EU's nuclear safety requirements. Economists warned on several occasions that the closure would affect the energy balance of the Balkan region and would increase dependence on Russia for electricity production.
