The re-election of President Georgi Purvanov could aid the ruling tripartite coalition end successfully its term in office, Prime Minister Sergei Stanishev said.

Stanishev attended on November 27 an extended session of the supreme council of the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP).

Purvanov’s electoral victory could strengthen BSP policies and the ties between party leaders, which could strengthen the party overall, said Stanishev as quoted by Bulgarian National Radio.

Some of Purvanov’s opponents said they were going to work for the preliminary fall of the ruling coalition. His re-election also confirmed the stability of the tripartite coalition, said Stanishev.

Stanishev said that threat to the current Cabinet could come from several directions. Ultra-nationalist movement Ataka gathered significant support in the presidential elections and managed to attract the interest of some right-wing supporters, said he.

The approaching municipal elections and the selection of Bulgarian European Parliament member could further strengthen Ataka, said Stanishev.

Right-wing parties reached the bottom at the presidential elections because of their failure to unite and select a strong candidate, Stanishev said.

At the same time rightist formations got a new chance to gain strength through the entry of Sofia mayor Boyko Borissov and his party into politics, said Stanishev.

Borissov saw his Sofia mayor position as an advertising platform, from where to send messages, Stanishev said.  One of Borissov’s aims was the creation of a new, strong right wing, led by himself and his party, said Stanishev.
