RE-ELECTED MAYOR BULGARIA'S CAPITAL TO KEEP HIS DEPUTIES
13:54 Tue 30 Oct 2007

The re-elected Sofia Mayor Boiko Borissov had no intention of replacing the team of his deputy mayors, Borissov said on October 30, as quoted by mediapool.bg.

Borissov said the only deputy mayor to be replaced would be Irina Papancheva, until now responsible for social activities, who was resigning for personal reasons. Papancheva was to head to Brussels where she would further improve her qualification, Borissov said. Meanwhile, he invited people with disabilities and those classified in other disadvantaged groups to propose their own candidate for the vacant position, mediapool.bg said.

Sofia’s finance would continue to be supervised by Minko Gerdjikov, who had been appointed to the position by the previous mayor Stefan Sofianski, and had on several occasions so far acted as Sofia mayor. Maria Boyadjiiska would be responsible for environmental matters and as such, deal with Sofia’s waste management problems. She was appointed by Borissov when he first became mayor in 2005 and she took over from Milor Mihailov, who resigned because of the waste crisis.

Bulgarian capital’s transport matters would continue to be managed by Velizar Stoilov, another deputy inherited from Sofianski’s last mandate. Construction and development matters would be handled by Irina Savina, legal matters by Yulia Nenkova, and education by Yordanka Fandukova.

The first task of the newly elected Sofia City Council, where his party GERB would have absolute majority, would be to cut down the number of people appointed on the board of directors of municipal companies, Borissov said. He warned that all managers appointed for political reasons would be sacked and new ones would be hired on a competitive basis.
