President Georgi Purvanov awarded on April 10 world ice skating champions Albena Denkova and Maxim Staviski Stara Planina medals.
The pair’s coaches Natalia Linichuk and Genadi Karponosov received presidential distinction for their contribution to Denkova and Staviski’s success.
Denkova and Staviski became world champions for the first time in 2006 in Canada’s Calgary. They won the title for the second time in March 2007 in Tokyo.
Purvanov said that the pair had the potential to win Olympic gold as well. He said that he will support Denkova and Staviski’s idea to open an elite figure skating school in Bulgaria.
Denkova said that she was just as excited to receive the presidential distinction as she was to get the gold medal in Tokyo.
Stara Planina medals are given for significant achievements in a sphere. The award is the highest national distinction. Denkova and Staviski received it for their contribution to the development of sports in Bulgaria.
