Public transportation employees in Sofia decided to postpone the strike initially scheduled for May 15.
Sofia municipality officials and labour unions reached the agreement on May 14, Novinar daily reported.
The two entities signed an agreement concerning salary increase for public transportation employees. Sofia municipality said that the wages will be increased by 200 leva starting June.
June 15 is the deadline for meeting union demands. Some demands have not been dealt with yet, so labour unions and public transportation employees remain ready to strike.
Wage increase negotiations caused chaos within the Sofia municipal council. Its members failed reaching an agreement. At the end representatives of the Union of Free Democrats (UFD) left the session.
UFD said that the strike has been used for political aims. After long discussion municipal council members came up with a resolution aimed at preventing an eventual strike. A salary increase also received approval.
According to the municipal decision, seven million leva of the money allocated for transport aid for pensioners, students and people with disabilities will be used to meet the demands of public transportation workers.
