PROTEST IN BULGARIA AGAINST BOURGAS-ALEXANDROUPOLIS PIPELINE PROJECT

Bourgas-Alexandroupolis oil pipeline project provoked protests among residents of the Bulgarian Black Sea coastal region, Russian Vremya Novostei daily reported.

Sozopol municipality launched on June 17 a sign-up list against the construction of oil transportation terminal in the region of the resort, the report said.

According to Sozopol representatives, the setting up of the project poses environmental hazard and could affect tourism in the region.

Municipality council head Panayot Reizi said as quoted by the paper that municipality opposed to the project because petroleum will be unloaded in the sea and afterwards delivered through the pipeline which will be located in the bottom of the sea bed.

Bourgas-Alexandroupolis pipeline will transport Russian petroleum through the port of Bourgas to the Greek port of Alexandroupolis.

After years of negotiations an agreement was finally signed between the tree countries involved in it, Bulgaria, Russia and Greece.
