The Crime Fighter Restoring Bulgaria’s Reputation is The Telegraph’s article describing the work of Prosecutor-General Boris Velchev since he started his term in office.
According to the report more than 120 public murders have occurred in Bulgaria over the past 10 years. A number of shady businessmen, bankers and ‘gangsters’ were murdered in broad daylight with insignificant investigation results until present.
Velchev was trying to change the tendency, The Telegraph reported. He requested investigation of the work of numerous prosecutors and dismissed the heads of Bulgaria’s Traffic Police and fire department on charges of malfeasance.
"We don't plan to stop with those people. We believe there's only one way to combat organised crime and that is to have a clean prosecution service,” Velchev told The Telegraph.
Velchev said that Bulgarians were aware of the names of people who needed to be put in prison and the country was going to be much safer if this was done.
European Commission reports and a number of Western officials called for more efficient anti-organised crime and anti-corruption measures in Bulgaria.
Yet the article said that despite the efforts Velchev was one man and if efficient measures were not implemented soon Bulgaria could experience the introduction of a safeguard clause, The Telegraph reported.
