PROSECUTOR-GENERAL CRITICISES BULGARIA’S PARLIAMENT ON VOTE BUYING DECISION
09:16 Thu 25 Oct 2007

Prosecutor-General Boris Velchev criticised the Parliament’s decision to include vote selling in the Penal Code.

Proclamation of vote selling as a crime would only hinder its exposure, he said as quoted by mediapool.bg.

According to Velchev, “with that decision of the Parliament we entered a vicious circle.”

“Usually that crime is committed by two people in private.” After the Parliament’s decision, none of the parties in the deal will benefit from revealing the crime. No one would confess," Velchev said.

If only vote buying had been made a crime, the work of the prosecution would be facilitated.

A number of prosecutions in the country investigated vote buying, Velchev said.
