Bulgaria’s Prosecution launched 13 investigations into manipulation of the results of the municipal elections held in late October 2007, the Prosecution press office announced.
A total of 179 complaints for violations of the elections were submitted to the Prosecution for the two rounds of the elections, mediapool.bg said.
Most of the complaints were for vote-buying. If vote-buying was proven, the violators could be sentenced to up to three years in prison.
Election results in Pernik were the most challenged ones, mediapool.bg said. The prosecution launched three investigations of vote-selling and buying in the town. Votes were traded at 40 to 100 leva. Bulgarian Socialist Party nominee Rositsa Yanakieva won the elections in Pernik.
Prosecution launched two investigations in the towns of Berkovitsa and Stara Zagora and in the coastal city of Varna. One of the investigations in Varna was against Order, Rule of Law and Justice’s nominee Vesselin Mareshki. Police already searched Mareshki's offices and seized documents related to the elections.
