On October 11, in its last sitting before the municipal elections, the Sofia Municipal Council accepted proposed changes in the city zoning plan.

The changes were proposed by Sofia's chief architect Petar Dikov and provided for the liquidation of buildings of Kremikovtsi, the construction of residency complexes north and north-east of the city, new business zones, a new graveyard, an extension of the metro to reach Kremikovtsi, and moving the central prison to outside the city, among others, netinfo.bg reported.

A sport hall would be build on 3 000 sq m of the current Yuzhniya park (South Park). Zapaden park (West Park) would loose part of its green zone north of the Syhodolska river to residential construction.

The changes would be send to the Council of Ministers for approval and were expected to go into force in March 2008. The law for the Sofia zoning plan was accepted in parliament in 2006.

The largest area to change its destination is the land under Kremikovtsi metallurgical plant.

Five industrial zones in the city would change their destination to residential and new residential areas would be built near the villages of German, Lozen, Bistritsa, Voinyagovtsi, Lokorsko, Bankya and Vladaya.
