PROGRESS IN SOME AREAS, BULGARIA STILL LACKS RESULTS IN FIGHT AGAINST CORRUPTION- EC REPORT
09:52 Tue 26 Jun 2007

Bulgaria achieved reforms progress in various areas but still lacks specific results in key sectors, like the fight against organised crime and corruption, part of the European Commission report on the country’s reforms said.

The complete report is to be issued on June 27. It will say whether the EC will impose any sanctions on Bulgaria and Romania.

According to EC sources, the report said that if Bulgaria continued exercising effort in improving its justice system, the introduction of safeguard clauses would be unnecessary.

In case reforms remain slow, the country risks being unable to apply effectively European legislation, the report said.

The report is based on the inspection of EC representatives who visited Bulgaria in April.

Other issues that the report addresses include agriculture, aviation safety, veterinary inspection and food quality control.
