Politics

- Just days after making an alliance to co-ordinate its actions with the opposition parties in Parliament, Citizens for the European Development of Bulgaria (GERB) is again striking out on its own. GERB leader and Sofia mayor Boiko Borissov made it clear his participation in the joint opposition rally against the Government was a casual one, Sega daily said.

- President Georgi Purvanov, Prime Minister Sergei Stanishev and Interior Minister Roumen Petkov have received death threats, but refused closer protection, Standart daily reported.

Social

- Bulgaria's Traffic Police will collect the environmental fee on automobiles. Nearly 70 per cent of old cars importers are currently not paying it, Dnevnik daily said.

- The new Civil Procedure Code will go into effect as of March 1 2008, despite concerns that its flaws would further slow down the work of the judicial system, Trud daily reported.

Economy

- Allied Irish bought 49.99 per cent of the Bulgarian American Credit Bank for 216.2 million euro, Dnevnik daily said.

- Germans and Austrians are casting their eyes over Bulgaria's state-run railways, Standart daily reported.
