These are some of the top headlines in Bulgarian newspapers on April 25 2008. The Sofia Echo has not verified these stories and cannot vouch for their accuracy.

International

- Bulgarian daily Dnevnik said the US Department of Justice published a report saying that organised crime was one of the highest threat. The report mentioned Bulgaria in the section on corrupt state officials. According to Trud daily, the US did not believe the Bulgarian anti-organised crime directorate.

Politics

- Dnevnik said that the reason for the renaming of the Disaster Management Ministry into the Ministry for Special Circumstances was the desire of minister Emel Etem to take on the fight against hailstorms, which until now had been under the Agriculture Ministry. The fire department however would remain outside  Etem's ministry, Dnevnik said.

-  Bulgarian daily Novinar quoted Sofia mayor Boiko Borissov commenting on the changes in Cabinet. Borisov reportedly said that "(Prime Minister Sergei) Stanishev is not our enemy, but (Movement of Rights and Freedom leader Ahmed) Dogan is dangerous."

Society

- Bulgarian daily 24 Chasa reported that off-shore companies are being investigated and income from these companies would have to be reported.

- According to Novinar, heroin was out of fashion; ecstasy and amphetamine have replaced it on the Bulgarian drugs scene. Drugs worth 4 million leva were found in a car belonging to a construction-worker, Novinar said.

- According to 24 Chasa daily, Germany was looking for Bulgarian workers to harvest strawberries and asparagus.

Economy

- Dnevnik reports that Bulgargaz and Gazprom had registered a company for the South Stream pipeline. The Bulgarian-Russian agreement was up for approval in Parliament, Dnevnik said.

- Standart quoted Bulgarian President Georgi Purvanov as saying that the country should speed up the construction of the highway. The highway would be given on concession, though Bulgarians and Serbians were said to prefer an air link.
