Bulgarian Prime Minister Sergei Stanishev and his Portuguese counterpart José Sócrates will discus the spelling of the EU currency in Bulgarian in a telephone call.
Bulgaria wants to keep its current spelling of the word, “evro”. The European Central Bank demands of Bulgaria to use the “euro” spelling, as it is in all the EU member states.
Stanishev said that main arguments in the discussion were the agreement that the currency name spelling would be strictly limited to the transliteration of the word in Cyrillic.
“There is understanding” that the transliteration of “euro” in Cyrillic is “evro”, Stanishev said as quoted by Focus news agency.
Stanishev also reminded that Cyrillic is an official alphabet in the EU after Bulgaria’s EU accession.
Portugal holds the EU presidency until the end of 2007.
