POLITICAL IMMUNITY IN BULGARIA NEEDS TO BE FUNCIONAL
16:11 Wed 01 Feb 2006

Bulgarian MPs should have functional immunity, which will protect only their freedom of speech, Speaker of Parliament Georgi Pirinski said. Currently politicians enjoy complete political immunity and cannot face trial during their term in office.

The judicial system is developed enough to control society and media, without the need for complete political immunity politicians currently enjoy.

Political immunity needs to be discussed in the National Assembly in more detail, Pirinski said. One suggestion is for MPs to sign a declaration before being selected that they carry responsibility for their actions.

Opposition formations once again demanded the complete removal of political immunity. A declaration on the issue was presented by Democrats for Strong Bulgaria leader Ivan Kostov, mediapool.bg reported.
