A police officer had been arrested while transporting 100 kg of amphetamine, in an operation by the anti-organised crime chief directorate, mediapool.bg reported on November 27.

He had been arrested on November 26 at a gas station near Sofia. The car he was driving was not his property.

Thirty-year-old T.D. was an employee of the regional directorate police in Plovdiv, and worked in the road crimes department.

Employees of the Interior Ministry were often used to transport drugs in the country, since it was presumed they would not be stopped for controls. This had been the second case of this kind over the past couple of years, Kalin Mihov, deputy director of the anti-organised crime chief directorate said on November 27.

The amphetamines seized were presumed to have been on their way to Sofia, from where they would go to Turkey. There they were supposed to be transformed into tablets, mediapool.bg said.

According to information from the Interior Ministry, the amphetamine substance, with additional chemicals, could be used to produce 16 million tablets, worth 320 000 dollars (217 222 euro) on the Bulgarian market. The price on the retail market in the Arab world was said to be about 320 million dollars (217.2 million euro).

The drug had been loaded into the car in Batak, in the home of the second suspect, S.S. (35). He did not have a criminal record, but was said to be one of the leaders of an organised crime group, involved in processing amphetamine, mediapool.bg said.

There was no information whether other police officers had been involved, the anti-organised crime chief directorate said.
