09:02 Thu 17 May 2007

Norwegian police busted a Bulgarian prostitution ring in Oslo and arrested 12 people.

Five Norwegian citizens, five Bulgarians and two Turkish featured among the detained, The Norway Post reported.

The arrested were accused of organisating the scheme, which involved nearly 40 Bulgarian women. One of the detained is also accused of human trafficking.

Each of the detained men had specific role in the ring. Some recruited the women in Bulgaria, others transported them to Norway, while another group rented apartments there, the newspaper said.

According to Norwegian officials, the detained men gained more than six million euro from their illegal activities.

Norwegian police said that it relied on the women’s testimonies.

Tuesday's police action “Operation Hooker,” targeting Bulgarian prostitutes and their pimps in Oslo, is part of a long-term investigation by the special STOP group (Special force against Trafficking in the Oslo Police precinct), working on the case since February.
