17:16 Tue 13 Mar 2007

Bulgarian customs officers seized 163.402 kg heroin at the border checkpoint of Kalotina in the morning of March 11.

The heroin is worth nearly 30 million leva and is the largest amount of the narcotic substance ever seized at Kalotina, head of customs office in Kalotina Tsvetan Suev said as quoted by Focus news agency.

Heroin was hidden in the cabin of a Turkish truck traveling from Turkey to Austria.

Customs officers found 158 packages having the same size, which were 'extremely professionally' prepared, Kalotina's customs officials said.

This is the second largest attempt for heroin smuggling across Bulgaria for the past five years after the record 230 kg seized in 2002 at Kapitan Andreevo border checkpoint.

The amount of seized drugs at Kalotina border checkpoint for 2005 totaled 815 kg and 17 out of 26 cases were heroin smuggling attempts, Suev said. The total amount of heroin was 279 kg.

Suev said that smugglers used many non-traditional places to hide the drugs, including shoes, belts, luggage, various parts of the car and even jars with honey.
