CERTIFIED PLOVDIV
Plovdiv municipality received on March 6 a certificate “Municipality, ready for business development”. According to the municipality, this means it is competitive, conducts planned and purposeful activities IN local economic development, supports local business sustainment and development, successfully takes steps to attract new businesses, and is well briefed on its resources and potential, successfully marketing, them as well as is able to professionally serve investment interests. Two representatives of the European integration department received individual certification as specialists in local economic development. To obtain the certificate, Plovdiv competed in the project “Local economical development and Bulgarian municipalities marketing”, together with 38 other municipalities. The Foundation for Local Government Reform, the international association for citizen governments in the US and USAID helped the municipalities with successful economic policy implementation for them to be competitive with other European cities.
GOOD HYGIENE
The Ministry of Environment and Water Affairs (MOEW) granted 500 000 leva to Plovdiv to carry out a project “Street sewage and water systems in Kapana borough”. In the first stage, sewer systems and a water-providing network will be constructed in the area of four streets. The local municipality is co-financing the project with 500 000 leva, which is supposed to finish at the end of 2007. Grant aid of 1.5 million leva has been given by MOEW to another Plovdiv project for separate refuse collection in the city’s Trakia district.
BAD HYGIENE
The Regional Inspectorate for the Protection and Control of Public Health (RIPCPH) issued orders for closure of six food supplying firms, Radio Plovdiv said on March 21. RIPCPH director Ani Eginliyan said at a news conference on March 21 that measures were needed because the firms were functioning without registration or because their hygiene levels were very poor. Two bakeries in Belozem and Assenovgrad operating without RIPCPH registration were closed down. Two food stands in fitness centres in Plovdiv and the village of Kouklen were shut down due to bad hygiene, as well as a snack kiosk and a food shop in the village Dolna Mahala.
GOOD WINE
The Vinaria 2007 annual wine fair started on March 28 and will last until March 31 at the International Fairgrounds Plovdiv. This is one of the most significant and impressive events of its kind in Central and South East Europe. During the wine festival, there will be a National Wine Tastings competition, the most prestigious event for evaluating Bulgarian wines and spirits.

Ten school buildings in Pazardjik municipality are dangerous because their ceilings and roofs could fall. They include Vassil Levski school in Pazardjik and the schools in the villages Bratanitsa, Glavinitsa, Chernogorovo, Pishtigovo and Ivailo, as well as three schools in the town of Septemvri and the school in Sestrimo, Belovo municipality. Radio Plovdiv announced the heads of these settlements were notified and the school principals were issued instructions for urgent stabilisation activities.
