An online petition demanding the resignation of Interior Minister Roumen Petkov was posted on bgpetition.com on April 3 2008.
The petition was posted by the civil movement Civil society against corruption. By the evening of the same day, the number of signatures reached 537.
The petition says: We call upon all of those who think that: Roumen Petkov's actions are damaging for Bulgaria; don't accept the binding of the state and the mafia; don't accept the fact that bandits rule towns, regions and the entire country; having dignity is more important than being afraid; don't want to be tapped and followed by the police in contradiction to the law, to sign the petition.
Petkov has admitted that he has met with businessmen under investigation by police, as well as having phone conversations with them, but claimed all his actions were done in the ministry's and country's best interests. His numerous detractors, however, accused him of ties with organised crime.
