PEOPLE IN BULGARIA UNAWARE OF THEIR RIGHTS
09:00 Wed 21 Feb 2007

In EU member states 31 per cent of the people were aware of their rights and how to proceed in case of discrimination, mediapool.bg reported.

European Commission (EC) said that Bulgarian’s lack of information resulted from the fact that Bulgaria became EU member less than two months ago. Laws changed during the accession process, EC said.

Research also showed that age discrimination is most popular in Bulgaria. People with disabilities  and those of different ethnic origin aere also subjected to discrimination.

According to most Bulgarians the government should fight discrimination. EU citizens assign the task to universities and parents.

EC designated 2007 as the European Year of Equal Opportunities for All, a part of EC’s strategy to fight discrimination.

Bulgaria approved an equal opportunities strategy, which includes information campaigns, cultural and sports events and inclusion of risk groups in the labour market. According to EC Bulgaria’s strategy was the most ambitious in Europe.
