Sofia mayor Boiko Borissov, was subpoenaed as witness in the Milcho Bonev, aka Bai Mile, murder trial.
Borissov leads one of the most popular parties in Bulgaria, Citizens for the European Development of Bulgaria (CEDB).
Borissov gave testimonies during the July 13 court sitting of the Sofia City Court, Focus news agency said.
He was Interior Ministry’s general secretary at the time of the murder and appears in a video of the crime scene inspection.
Sofia mayor said that he knew Bonev personally, and was very surprised by his murder.
Borissov said that by the time current defendants in the trial were arrested, the Interior Ministry was “absolutely convinced” that they were guilty.
Bonev and five of his bodyguards were murdered on July 30 2004 in Sofia. The victim owned security companies and worked with Kostadin Dimitrov, aka Samokovetsa, who was shot dead in Amsterdam in 2006. Bonev’s partners were some of the most prominent criminal bosses in the country.
